EcoJohn

Another good thing about peeing outside is that its cheap. Its a lot cheaper than some new alternatives shown in this article about "EcoJohn". Some of EcoJohn's products:

EcoJohn Basic: A composting toilet that separates liquid and solid waste. Liquid waste is diverted to a drain pit or septic system; solid waste is dried and can be used as compost. Cost: $1,095.

EcoJohn Sr.: An incinerating toilet that reduces solid and liquid waste to sterile ash. Cost: $3,695.

EcoJohn WC5: A propane-based incinerator that works with low-flush toilets. Waste is stored in a holding tank, then burned off by an industrial-strength burner. Cost: $6,495.

EcoJohn WC16: A diesel-based incinerator with a greater capacity than the WC5 model. Waste is stored in a holding tank, then burned off by an industrial-strength burner. Cost: $12,995.

Hey--we're not against buying any of these. Anything that costs more than the value of our cars has to be good for taking care of our "business."

High gas prices shake up the world of outside pee enthusiasts

High gas prices have seemingly pushed many truckers to pee in old water bottles, and throw them out the window. The thinking is--truckers are now driving slower, in order to use less gas. Using less gas leads to less truck stops for gas refills, and bathroom breaks. This leads the truckers to brave one handed driving, and the possibility of overfill.

Hey, we've all been there at some point in our lives, but PO would prefer that the bottles not be thrown out windows--why not wait for a trash can? Someone has to pick that stuff up, buddy.

Jellyfish Sting - Pee Away?

Turns out, peeing on a jelly fish sting is not really all that helpful. Pee contains ammonia, which is why its been known for being a cure for the stings. However, according to this linked article: "Depending on the person -- and whether he or she is dehydrated, diabetic, on a protein diet, or dealing with myriad other conditions -- urine may or may not be about as good as fresh water."

We figure that there not not many times that you get to pee on friends and family, so you may as well just forget about this article.

National Geographic Human Footprint

National Geographic is airing a new special, Human Footprint, which covers our consumption on Earth. There is an interesting "interactive" portion of the site which allows you to estimate the amount of showers you take per week, which can calulate the amount of gallons that you will use in your lifetime. (If you take 7, five minute showers per week, you will use 28,301 gallons in your lifetime).

They do fail to mention how much water would be saved if you pee outside once per day. Maybe they wil do that next season.

CBS has a news story claiming that doctors have figured out that drinking 8 glasses of water a day could be a waste of time. One of the doctors is quoted in the story as saying "Those individuals that enjoy going to the bathroom would benefit from high fluid intake. But others definitely would not". The doctor did not mention peeing outside, at least not in this article.

PeeOutside Press

If you get a chance, check out page 40 of the April edition of Atlanta magazine (only $4.95 newsstand price):

Turns out, Pee Outside was the first to make the The "No" Pile

Here is the story (its not online yet, as far as we know):

"For every story idea we put into the magazine, there are dozens that don't make the cut. A sampling from this month's rejection stack....

Story: Pee Outside asks Atlantans to urinate outside daily to save the three gallons of water used by the average toilet flush.
Problem: Sure, 5.1 million Atlantans could save much-needed H2O that way, but putting a brick in the tank is less odorous--and less likely to land you in jail."

(There is a big thumbs down next to the story too...they might be missing the humor of the site)

We're not sure if it was an actual endorsment for peeoutside.org, but check out this story on a pro-basketballer getting arrested for public urination in Idaho. The basketball player is the Chicago Bull's second round draft from last year, JamesOn Curry. Did you think that we made a typo with his first name? You thought wrong! Anyway, a reminder that if you are peeing outside, do it on your own property. Another tidbit of advice, if you are getting arrested, don't resist it, that only makes it worse.

Trucker Bombs

Check out this Redding.com article, which details a problem for the State of California. It appears that each year, the state pays over $50 million cleaning up "trucker bombs". What is a "trucker bomb" you ask? These are urine filled bottles, which more often than not, contain urine. The problem is, each time one of these bottles are found, they have to be cleaned up by hazardous material specialists, tested, then disposed of. The bombs also have caused explosions when road workers mow over them. Anyway--the lessons to learn here are:

1. Don't pee in a bottle and throw it on the highway--that is nasty and costs tax paying citizens money

2. Don't shake hands with a trucker after he gets in from a long trip.

3. If your friend tells you that he is a "hazardous material specialist" you probably don't have to be all that impressed--all he is doing is cleaning up pee bottles all day.

Marietta outlaws pee outside

Marietta City Council just passed a "we hate saving water during the drought" law, according to the AJC. Clearly the city of Marietta doesn't realize how many gallons are being saved a day by peeing outside?! Since this site was started, based on the people who have officially signed up, we have saved over 10,000 gallons in a little over a month! That's only people who have signed up on our site. We have nearly 400 members in our Facebook group, many of which have yet to officially sign up. If all of them were to sign up, we'd be saving 1200 gallons of water A DAY!

So think about what laws you're passing, Marietta City Council. You clearly didn't look at all the benefits.

Asparagus Pee

The news is not new that asparagus makes your pee smelly funky. We looked up why: Asparagus contains some type of sulfur compound called mercaptan. Mercaptan is the same compound that is made by skunks, but apparantly has nothing to do with skunky beer. The actual smell is made when it is broken down in our digestive systems. Some people aren't lucky enough to have the gene which makes the enzyme that breaks down mercaptan. We're not sure, but those people are probably also communists.

We'll be on the look out for some other foods that make your pee stink, or better yet, change color. Let us know if you think of some.

Have you ever wondered what the Tennessee River tastes like? It appears from this article that we're (again) checking out our options with piping in the sweet-sweet water from the Tennessee River. So, aside from billions of dollars, what could getting this water piped in cost us? Good question. If Chattanooga gets its way, Georgia would agree not to build a second airport, in Northern Georgia, to allow them to be the only major option aside from Hartsfield-Jackson. There are also talks about putting in a high speed rail line between the Chattanooga and Atlanta airports, so that could be cool. Of course, us Atlantans would miss our chance of buying fireworks at Big Daddy's if we didn't have to drive there.

Following up on one of yesterday's posts, the AJC now has a "count down" clock for the time remaining until Lake Lanier becomes a dirt bowl. The clock is described by the AJC as:

"A snapshot on the amount of water left in Lake Lanier's primary supply pool. The days left indicate how many more days of stored water remains for downstream needs, including metro Atlanta's easily accessible drinking water and treated sewage needs, as well as for power plants. Losses or gains vary from day to day."

131 days would put us around April 10th. Guess what also happened on April 10th (in 1912)? The Titanic left Southampton on its first (and only) voyage. Crazy.

-Toilets are the biggest wasters of water in the household

-In order to create a bottle of water, 3 liters of water is used (in order to make the plastic)

Pik's Pointers

The big wigs at Water Pik, Inc are piking the high road, and are marketing their new eco-friendly shower head. In this press release, they mention that two of the biggest wastes of water in the household is the toilet and the shower. While they miss the boat completely on peeing outside, they have some good pointers that we thought we'd include. Enjoy:
-- Before you lather up, trade up your current showerhead to a
water-efficient showerhead such as the Waterpik(R) EcoFlow(TM) which
helps reduce water consumption by up to 28%. Water-conserving
showerheads are inexpensive, easy to install and can save a family of
four up to 10,000 gallons of water a year.
-- Avoid letting the water faucet run while you brush your teeth, wash
your face or shave and you can save up to 4 gallons a minute. That's
200 gallons a week for a family of four.
-- Two of the highest uses of water in the house are the shower and
toilet. When possible, take showers instead of a bath and consider
washing your face or brushing your teeth while in the shower.
-- Conserve water in the shower. Turn off the water while you shampoo and
condition your hair and you can save more than 50 gallons a week.
-- Fix leaking faucets and toilets that flush themselves. Research has
shown that an average of 8% (or more) of all home water is wasted
through leaks. Fixing a leak can save 500 gallons each month.

Another item worth mentioning from the article: The average Cobb County family uses 217 gallons of water per day. Assuming that a family of four would each pee outside once a day in Cobb County, that average family could bring their water usage down 5.5%!
